
Stop Wasting Space on Your Brake Pad Line
Let’s be honest: old-school convection ovens are a drag. They work by heating up the air, hoping that heat eventually finds its way into the part. It’s slow. It’s inefficient. And it’s the reason your curing tunnels are probably half the length of your actual factory. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared (SWIR). Instead of messing around with the air, SWIR goes straight for the substrate. It hits the part directly. The secret is in the speed. Because SWIR operates at higher frequencies, the energy actually sinks deep into the coating almost instantly. You get a massive spike in temperature right away. What does that actually mean for you? It means you can chop your tunnel length by 30% to 50% and still put out the same amount of product. We use high-watt density lamps that just dump energy into the pads the second they enter the oven. But you can’t just slap these in and walk away. You have to get the setup right. First, your power supply needs to handle high-density loads. We usually set these up in arrays so every single inch of the brake pad gets the same amount of heat. If you end up with cold spots, the coating won’t cure right, and you’ll deal with delamination—which is a nightmare nobody wants. And for heaven’s sake,watch your cooling. These lamps get incredibly hot. If your housing isn’t vented or water-cooled, you’re going to fry your sensors and melt your wiring. It’s all about a balancing act: you want the pads screaming hot, but you need the chassis to stay cool. The best part is how this affects your daily numbers. When you ditch convection for IR, your line speed changes. You can push way more parts through every hour because the “dwell time” needed for the chemicals to cure is basically slashed. It’s a simple swap for the heating section of your line. You get more throughput without having to build a new wing on your factory. Just make sure your conveyor speed is dialed in with the IR ramp-up. If you’re too slow, you’ll scorch the surface. If you’re just right, you’ve got a powerhouse of a production line.
