
Getting the Heat Right: The Trick to Vertical IR Walls
When you’re building a custom heating wall for paint or brake lining, the total wattage is actually the easy part. The real headache? Getting the heat to hit the car evenly from top to bottom. Think about it. Every vehicle has a different profile. Some parts of the chassis sit closer to the lamps, others are further away. Because of how infrared radiation works, even a few inches of difference can leave you with “cold spots” that just won’t cure. It’s frustrating, and it ruins the finish. The secret is in the spacing. We don’t just line the lamps up in a perfect grid and call it a day. Instead, we map out the height and width of the vehicle to see where the heat actually needs to go. For a big SUV, we’ll pack more lamps into the middle zones to cover that extra surface area. You have to get the vertical pitch just right so the radiation cones overlap. If they’re too far apart, you’ll see “striping” on the car. But if you crowd them too much? You’ll probably burn the finish on the lower panels where the heat likes to settle. Picking the right gear Shortwave quartz lamps are our go-to because they heat up incredibly fast. We usually lean toward high-wattage tubes so we can keep the whole setup compact without losing any punch. But there’s a catch. When you pack that much power into a small space, things get hot. Really hot. If your ventilation isn’t strong enough to pull that excess air out, you’ll cook your own reflectors and kill the life of your tubes. It’s a trade-off you have to plan for. Tuning it in the real world On paper, everything looks great. In the shop? Not always. That’s why we always use adjustable mounting brackets. It lets you tweak the distribution after you’ve run a few test pieces. We also wire everything with independent zone controls. This is a life-saver. It means you can dial back the power on the bottom row—which usually runs hotter anyway—while pushing more energy up toward the roofline. It’s a bit of a balancing act, but that’s how you get a fast line without sacrificing the quality of the cure.
