Most people are still using those massive convection ovens for brake pad coating. The problem? They heat the air first, and then the air has to slowly soak into the material. It’s a slog. It’s why your tunnels are miles long and your cycle times feel like they’re dragging. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared (SWIR). Instead of waiting for the air to warm up, SWIR beams energy straight into the coating. It’s instant.
Cutting the Tunnel in Half
When you switch to high-wattage IR lamps, you can actually shrink your tunnel length by up to 50%. Think about how much room that opens up on your factory floor. Because the heat hits the surface of the pad immediately, the solvents evaporate faster and the curing happens in a fraction of the time. You get more parts out the door every hour, and you don’t have to build an extension on the warehouse to do it.
How it Actually Works
We use quartz-halogen emitters for these lines. The best part? They hit operating temperature in seconds. Unlike old-school gas burners, you have total control over different zones. If you notice the front of the pad is curing too fast while the core is still wet, you don’t have to panic. Just dial back the first set of lamps and crank up the second. It’s that simple. One heads-up on the setup: these lamps pull a lot of current. Make sure your wiring and control panels are up to the task. If you under-spec the power supply, you’re just asking for a burnout.
The Trade-offs (Because nothing is perfect)
Here’s the catch: IR heating is directional. If your pads aren’t sitting exactly right on the conveyor, you’ll end up with “cold spots” or uneven curing. You have to be picky about the distance between the lamp and the workpiece. Keep it consistent, or you’ll see it in the quality. Also, these lamps gethot. Really hot. That kind of heat can stress the oven shell and warp the hardware over time. You’ll need a solid cooling system for the reflectors to keep everything straight. But once you get that distance dialed in and your zone temps set? Your throughput just takes off.
